The Original "Stripes on Tour"

Report from the Kapiti Coast Seminar

Hosting Mr Niven and Mr Pearson was a real honour for Kapiti Coast Taekwon-do. For this event we felt we needed to something special, different and in keeping with our clubs reputation to welcome our visitors. I happen to do Taiko, Japanese drumming, and I managed to get my group to do a special performance for the guest instructors.

After the performance we were taken through a rigorous warm up of sprinting, push-ups and pad work by Mr Jake Pearson and then were taught the principals of a good flying technique. Mr Pearson is highly skilled in this area and everybody, junior through to senior learnt a lot from his expertise. Once we finished the energetic warm up Mr Niven took over and began to teach us the answers to the why questions. For example why is a punch full facing not half facing. We had demonstrations and then we got into groups with a black belt and tried out the things we had just found out about our basic movements. Knowing how to do the movements properly was great but learning why each part of the technique is, how it is, was even better.

Hosting the two newly promoted fourth degrees was a very enlightening, fun experience. I hope they enjoyed teaching us as much as we enjoyed hearing about there experiences and learning what they know.

Mr Breen and Mr Niven conducted seminars in the South Island on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd March 2003. The first seminar was in Dunedin and lasted 4 hours. They taught principals of jumping (and some of the more unusual flying techniques), sparring techniques, Korean pronunciation and much more.

The second seminar as in Christchurch - photos below show Stuart Mayes, David Oliver, Laura Mitchell and Allison Roma practising Ground Technique

Just dropping you a quick note to let you know what a great success the seminar was last night, I moved the venue from our dojang to the new gym at the Ohakea Air Force base to cater for the other clubs throughout the region.  It was a great turn out for the CD region .

I can not speak highly enough of Mr Mantjika and Mr Pearson. If I were to put the night into one word it would be "FANTASTIC" shame we ran out of time. So a big thankyou from the Rangitikei Dragons to ITFNZ, for picking us as one of the port of calls, and we look forward to more of these visits to our region.

Regards Daniel Motu

I am just writing to let you know that the Stripes on Tour was great. Helen and I have heaps of things to think about to develop for ourselves and the class, and this was just with one four hour session. I hope there will be more. It was definetly motivational.

Thanks from Neil and Helen.

On behalf of the Hamilton and Te Awamutu Clubs I would like to say that the Hamilton seminar was awesome.  Mr Mantjika and Mr Pearson did a typically fantastic job focusing on all types of sparring and everyone that attended really enjoyed it and gained new confidence in their sparring abilities.  Many thanks to ITFNZ for arranging the seminars and to Lawrence and Jake for taking a really inspiring three hours of training.
