An event for Martial Artists who want to seriously grow their skills!

Check out the (long but detailed) workshop descriptions below. This is going to be comprehensive, fun, unique, and just damn cool!

AND, we have made it affordable! The individual components by themselves are valued at over $1400! Because this is the first time doing it and we want a packed room we have removed the cost barrier and the WHOLE TWO DAYS is only $199!

The venue only holds a limited number of people so we are doing it on a first-come, first-served basis. If you miss out on this you will kick yourself (rather than learn how to kick others) so book immediately.

Here is what we are covering and why you should attend (Put aside five mins to read this, there is a lot but that's why it will be so cool):

Carl van Roon

Sport Scientist Carl van Roon looks forward to sharing his experiences in two unique workshops comparing and contrasting ITF Taekwon-Do sparring techniques and strategies with those of other popular combat sports he has studied in working towards becoming New Zealand's first ITF Taekwon-Do sparring World Champion.

The first workshop will introduce effective combat strategies used by other stand-up striking arts such as Western boxing, Muay Thai and wrestling. Counter strategies for neutralising these contrasting approaches will be investigated, as well as ways in which ITF Taekwon-Do students may find inspiration in the strong points of these arts and their own comparable strategies. The second session will similarly investigate how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission wrestling have influenced current popular trends in MMA (mixed martial arts) training and where Taekwon-Do may fit in with these developments. It is hoped that through comparison with contemporary mixed martial arts fighting strategies, these sessions will inspire participants to further develop their own understanding of the relative strengths of our art, particularly in contrast to those disciplines which effectively utilise grappling strategies in both standing and grounded situations.

Workshop 1: Stand-up MMA approaches

This session will involve drilling of stand-up striking and wrestling techniques that predominate the current orthodox Mixed Martial Arts competitive scene. The techniques presented have been adapted from those arts most popular and influential in the evolution of mixed martial arts. The influence of disciplines such as Western boxing, Muay-Thai and Olympic wrestling will be explored relative to the diversity of threats that must be considered in Mixed Martial Arts competition. Finally, for each of these influences, examples of how ITF Taekwon-Do practitioners may best integrate and counter such strategies will be investigated.

Workshop 2: An introduction to Submission Wrestling / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the ITF Taekwon-Do practitioner

In follow-up to workshop 1, this session will focus on introducing the basics of ground positioning. We will begin with an explanation of the overwhelming influence that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission wrestling have had on the evolution of mixed martial arts training in the 21st century. Participants will initially work their way into understanding the importance of attaining proper ground position to acquire an advantage even against an opponent who is physically dominant. The importance of the 'guard' position as the heart of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will then be reinforced as regards the options this position offers in neutralising an aggressive opponent.

And opportunities to have your questions answered!
