Camp History

By Andy Craig, 2015

About 3 years ago, the whole veterans camp idea came after Morgan Lloyd and myself sat down to a couple of beers after a training session. At the time, we both had children in TKD and spent a lot of time running around after them. It occurred to us that there was a lot on offer, that catered to the younger demographic of TKD, but nothing really for the more mature students. So we thought about doing something for the ‘old farts’. The concepts and ideas grew as the beer’s flowed.

We’re both pretty easy going characters, so the camp was always going to have that feel about it. It had to be fun, social, not too strenuous, and not to serious. We put emphasis on making sure there was an abundance of hearty food, and plenty of time for people to mix and mingle, re-acquaint or make new friends.

The planning meetings became frequent, we were getting alot of positive feedback and reinforcement from higher up.

We chose the venue by default, as the National Kids camp is also there, so we knew the venue, which is ideal. It’s not too precious, has a rustic air about it, cosy with the log fire in the dining hall, and remote enough that we can make a bit of noise. We have Allyson Lloyd (Morgan’s wife) come along as a volunteer to be the cook and run the kitchen. It would be hard to imagine the camp without her input.

We were lucky enough to get 3 Masters on board as instructors, and were over the moon as the registrations came flooding in. The first camp went off like a firecracker, and so it continues.

The second year saw Vivienne Wood and myself organise, and this year was Mark Pettit and myself. Morgan Lloyd is never far away to lend a hand if required.

Over the years we have been lucky to have extra kitchen help for Allyson from some wonderful people like Francis Lloyd, Jade Gibson, Abbey Gibson and Charlotte Blackwell.
