Gemma began Taekwon-Do at 6 years old in Edinburgh, Scotland under Peter Harkess, then Sheena Sutherland where she reached 5th gup. Due to moving she left the art until at 18. She decided to return this time under Robin Coltman where she became Scottish National Champion in Patterns and placed 3rd in the Viking Cup in Sweden. She then lived in Australia for a time training under George Gabrielides in Sydney. Once she returned to Edinburgh to start a family, she returned to training in Edinburgh receiving her 1st degree black belt. Gemma moved to New Zealand shortly after to Whakatane where unfortunately there was no local TKD club. Hae Taekwon-Do Whakatane was opened in 2022 where Gemma was one of the first members and immediately became an assistant and dedicated student, receiving her 2nd Dan in 2023. She took over the club January 2024.
