About Taekwon-Do
Taekwon-Do is a martial art designed for self defense,
helping our members to develop their minds, bodies, and
moral character. It is a safe activity which improves
people’s health, and builds confidence and self
esteem.
ITFNZ, our national governing body, is one of the stongest
martial arts bodies in New Zealand, with over seventy
clubs nationwide. We achieved strong growth in the past
five years, and we have a strategy to achieve 10,000 members
by 2015.
ITFNZ covers a wide demographic. One third of our members
are female, and our members range from four years old
to over sixty years old.
As part of student development, ITFNZ offers a strong
tournament scene. This year over 300 competitors from
around the country will converge on the Queens Wharf Event
Centre in Wellington on 7 and 8 October to determine the
nation’s best.
ITFNZ is an incorporated non-profit organisation recognised
by SPARC and affiliated to the International Taekwon-Do
Federation.
We offer you the opportunity to promote your company
and support the community by sponsoring this fantastic
event. In return, your company can associate its brand
with a well-respected nationwide organisation, and expose
its products to our members, spectators and viewers.
Event Highlights
NZ’s World Champions
Did you know
that New Zealand regularly places in the top four countries
at the ITF World Championships? Many of New Zealand’s
world class athletes will be at the 2006 National Tournament,
including Graeme Patterson (Male Grand World Champion
Poland 2003) and Carl Van Roon (Special Technique World
Champion Poland 2003 and Germany 2005).
Free Sparring
Free sparring is controlled fighting between two competitors
in which points are awarded for attacking techniques that
land on a legal target area. Action is exciting and fast-paced
as competitors have two by two minute rounds out-score
the opponent.
Patterns
Patterns competition demonstrates grace, power and perfection
of pre-arranged movements against imaginary opponents.
Pyramid style knockout competitions means competitors
must always perform at their very best.
Special Technique
Taekwon-Do is famous for its flying kicks, and this event
is the showcase. Competitors perform five spectacular
kicks for the greatest height and distance.
Power Competition
This
event highlights the amazing and explosive destructive
power achievable through mastering Taekwon-Do techniques.
Competitors perform five hand and foot techniques to break
the most boards.
Team Event
The most exciting and anticipated event at the tournament,
which always gets the crowd pumping. Five or six members
from each region compete against the other regions in
sparring, special technique, power and team patterns.
Regional Pride
We have six regions battling for the title, “Best
Overall Region”.

will be a region to watch!
Wellington
Wellington has the home advantage in 2006, competing
before a home crowd, and cannot be underestimated!
South Island
You have to be hard to live in the South, and their
athletes are always a force to be reckoned with!
