Reason 5: everything you need within walking distance
Auckland City is a great place to host the 2011 World
Championships, because the Vector Arena is in the heart
of the city's Central Business District (or CBD), so everything
you need is in walking distance: shopping, hotels, a supermarket,
internet cafes, foreign exchange, cafes, bars, restaurants,
etc.
Queen St is the main street of Auckland City. It has
a host of shopping, for tourists and locals alike. The
surrounding streets also have a host of shopping, cafes
and bars.
Princes Wharf is one of Auckland City's many restaurant
and bar districts. (Princes Wharf is the wharf with the
Hilton Hotel - hotel number 7 on the map below.) You can
also find restaurants, cafes and bars in High St (where
hotel 5 is on the map), and Quay St (near the Vector Arena).
There are also great restaurants, cafes and bars in Parnell
(just above the key, on the map below.)
Take a look at the map below for some idea of Auckland
City's layout, and its proximity to Vector Arena. A key
and further explanation is below.
Vector Arena is in the top right corner of the map.
Notice the major transport hubs at the top centre of the
map. Britomart is Auckland City's major depot for buses
and trains, and it is only 600m from Vector Arena! About
100m further is the Ferry Building, for cruises of the harbour,
and trips to Waiheke Island, Devonport, and other destinations.
Selected hotels, selected internet cafes and selected foreign
exchange locations are included. These are not complete
lists!
Foodtown
is a major New Zealand supermarket chain - a supermarket
the locals use, so the prices are reasonable.
The internet
cafes and foreign
exchange locations shown on the map are only a small
selection. (The map was getting too cluttered.) Follow the
links to a list of locations listed in the New Zealand Yellow
Pages. Although only eight internet
cafes are listed, there are many more (for example,
half of the City Convenience stores are also internet cafes). There are
24 foreign
exchange locations listed!
Only 20 of the 55 hotels
and taverns in the Auckland City CBD are listed. We
selected a few close to Vector Arena, and most of the major
chain hotels to display on the map. The numbers corresponds
to the list below.
