Training Notes

Points raised by Master Davidson at the Technical Advisor Group Meeting

POINTERS and advice to Instructors
Basic Training/Instructional matters need to be addressed to improve standard of Taekwon-Do in NZ.

Students at the levels above Green Belt should be good and accurate in their basic/fundamental movements and stances etc.

- Dress/presentation:  Doboks worn correctly and Belts tied appropriately.

- Basic stances need checking.   Weight distribution, Body facings and foot placements are inconsistent.

- Equilibrium – Must feel in balance at beginning, middle and end of technique.

- Sine Wave.  Timing of the knee spring and up –down motion.  i.e. Body dipping too low. (Too much DOWN movement and not enough UP

- Reaction hand.  Not used to best effect or incorrectly placed.

- Kicks - lacked impact power, mainly due to the leg not completely extending. (Foot shapes and angles not accurate)

- Lacking power in blocking and punches was another area mentioned.

- Blocks:  X at the side block to the front or X at the front and block to the side.

- Overall Power and Spirit is lacking.

- Speed:  Maximum speed at the point of impact.

- Develop natural motion and efficiency of movements.

- Improve Flexibility.

- Flying/Jumping kicks for senior grades – perfected.

Master Barbour Session Mitt work combinations
Master McPhail Sessions Master McPhail introduced a number of areas to concentrate on plus recaps from the IIC in March. These points will also be taught at the Instructor Update course in February 2011.

Need to improve flexibility by more static stretching in classes. Once warm, stretch the lower back and hips first. Make sure we stretch the psoas as this is an important area often missed. Taught several stretches for back, hips and upper back (against wall) plus strengthening for abdomen (pressing small of the back to the floor) and back (arm forward, leg back lying on stomach and on knees).

Walking stance back foot position and L-stance front foot position.

Backward motion positions and timing (chest, opposite chest and ribcage definitions and practice).

Intermediate positions and techniques we discussed and practiced:

Cross the forearms in front of the CHEST for:
Outer forearm / inner forearm side block, Twin Forearm Block (left going left), Forearm low block, Backfist side strikes on walking stance, L-stance and Sitting stance.

Cross the forearms in front of the RIBCAGE for:
Palm hooking block, Knifehand low block, X-stance backfist side strike.

Cross the forearms in front of the fLOATING RIBS for:

Forearm rising block, Knifehand rising block.

Cross the forearms in front of the Lower Abdomen for:
Circular block (inner forearm forms straight line with opp shoulder)

Cross the forearms in front of the Epigastrium / Solar Plexus for:
Backfist sideback strike, Parallel blocks, Reverse knifehand w-shape block, Side front block.

- Front elbow strike, starts with both sidefists faced downward

- Double forearm block - starts with back arm fist at should level, other arm lower

- U-shape block, starts with palms upward

- Knifehand checking block, starts with palms facing each other

- Turning kicks - to side front except for Choong Moo movement 17.

Discussion Notes

2011 Instructors conference and senior dan grading. Considered Sept, Oct or Nov - depending on accommodation availability with the Rugby World Cup on around that time.

Black Belt Grading Scheduled to be held in Rarotonga in November 2011, open to our members, 1st to 3rd dan.

Instructors Update Courses happening in February. Instructors Courses explained.
Grading system Gup grading system explained and discussed.
Nationals Discussed ideas to improve the National Tournament and agreed that moving to a club competition (rather than regional) would be beneficial. No limit to number of entries from each club. Can still have team events with no limit of team entries.
Uniforms Standards of uniforms discussed and compliance to the rules by suppliers. All feel we should consider aligning with the ITF standards so not to disadvantage our own suppliers. (Our current standards are more strict than the ITF requirements).
Under 18 Series Agreed it would be better to return to a dedicated under 18 series rather than the all ages Star Series.
World Champs Discussed internal / external marketing needed to leverage on the World Champs.
Business Discussed the misconception that it is not okay to earn income from Taekwon-Do. Instructors need reminding about the opportunities for ways that Taekwon-Do can supplement their income or even become their profession. This information has always been a part of Mr Lowe's Induction courses, but Instructors need reminding and encouragement that this is okay.
